  1. The short- and long-term implications of surgery, including: common risk factors for post-surgical mortality and morbidity and current literature describing postoperative long-term outcomes
  2. Methods for assessing or measuring outcomes and prevention of poor postoperative outcomes
  3. Supportive services integral to postsurgical recovery (physiotherapy, occupational therapy, orthotics, social services
  4. Follow-up patients after discharge to the ward
  5. Participate in follow-up clinics / services where available
  6. Appreciates that physical and psychological consequences of surgery can have a significant and long-lasting effects
  7. Planning for discharge
  8. Recognises that surgery is a continuum throughout the 'patient journey' and is a small but often life-changing event
  9. Appropriate and timely referral to specialists / allied health professionals
