Immunocompromised patients

Intended Learning Outcomes

Immunocompromised Patients Part 1: Recognizing the Immunocompromised Patient in the ICU

  1. Define an approach to the identification of an immunocompromised patient
  2. Appreciate the utility (and limitations) of imaging, microbiological, and serologic testing for diagnosing infection in the immunocompromised patient
  3. Understand the promise, and present limitations, of new biochemical markers of infection and molecular diagnostic techniques for diagnosing infection in this patient population

Immunocompromised Patients Part 2: Mechanisms of Acquired Immunodeficiency

  1. Understand the elements of a normally functioning immune system
  2. List non-pharmacological and pharmacological mechanisms for acquired immunodeficiency
  3. Appreciate the potential for immunomodulatory therapies in the septic patient

Immunocompromised Patients Part 3: Managing the Immunocompromised Patient

  1. Define an approach to diagnosing and treating infection in a neutropenic patient
  2. Identify time periods of susceptibility and the different pathogens responsible for infection following solid organ transplant
  3. Identify time periods of susceptibility and the different pathogens responsible for infection following haematopoetic stem cell transplant

Immunocompromised Patients Part 4: Preventing Infection in the immunocompromised patient

  1. Identify the most important and effective intervention for reducing infection in the ICU
  2. Discuss the pros and cons of infection prevention measures in the ICU, and how they can protect the immunocompromised patient
  3. Define the clinical situations where antimicrobial prophylaxis is warranted
